EQUIPPING HEALTHCARE PROFESSIONALS TO INTEGRATE SPIRITUALITY IN PATIENT CARE

A hallmark of the Institute’s long history, our work with healthcare professionals has impacted thousands of students and seasoned professionals. The Institute’s unparalleled educational conferences enhance patient outcomes and provider well-being by teaching practices for cultural competency, spiritual intelligence, and self-care. The anchors of this center are our decades-long conferences, which are in partnership with leading institutions locally and around the nation.

Rabbi Samuel E. Karff was an Emeritus member of our Institute’s board and a long-time friend. He was known as a change-maker, a beloved friend to many, and a civil rights advocate. He served the board of trustees at the Institute for almost 25 years, dedicating his time and heart to caring for our community. Rabbi Karff served as Senior Rabbi at Congregation Beth Israel for decades and also worked to establish the Sacred Vocations course at UTHealth Science Center’s McGovern Medical School.

Our human spirituality is linked to being meaning-seeking creatures. Meaning is the sense that i have something to live for even when I’m facing life’s darker side - including life transforming or life-threatening illness. The Institute for spirituality and Health probes and fosters the conscious link between our spirituality an our health and well-being.
— Rabbi Samuel E. Karff

Principally supported through the generosity of the McGovern Foundation, this conference provides a venue for experienced caregivers and students alike to learn about the ways in which an awareness of spirituality is vital to successful nursing.

The conference brings together local and regional faith leaders and mental health professionals, interested laity, and distinguished scholars to discuss topics of common concern.

The conference is a forum for exchanging ideas from an array of disciplinary perspectives, from accounts of clinical practices to empirical research to scholarship in the humanities.

Sponsored by the Institute and MD Anderson, this symposium is an annual virtual conference that aims to educate healthcare professionals about the role of the Palliative Care Team in helping patients with advanced illness.

The Institute for Spirituality and Health and Debakey High School (DBH) partnered together to provide to the students education regarding mental health and the benefits of yoga/meditation in reducing stress and improving overall well-being.

The Institute hosts undergraduate and graduate students for research, readings, and projects. These internships allow students to explore diverse topics and network with leaders in their fields.
