Work with Bipolar Adolescents

Description

This program identifies the early stages of mental health issues in ninth grade freshmen at
DeBakey High School for Health Professions in the Texas Medical Center. It is a collaboration
with ISH, Baylor College of Medicine, Texas Children's Hospital and DeBakey High School. This program offers two yoga classes a week for twelve weeks each academic semester and is
taught by nationally certified yoga teachers. About 60 students participate in the yoga class
while another 60 are in a control group. Each student completes a Rating Scales Assessment at
the beginning and end of each semester. The scales measure stress, attention, and sleep
patterns. This is a voluntary program and the class is offered during the students' Health
Science class. It has been approved by the Baylor College of Medicine Institutional Review
Board for Research.

A similar program is being offered this Fall at Sutton Elementary School as an after-school
option for fifth graders.
