The Institute for Spirituality and Health at the Texas Medical Center to Host Mind-Body Skills Workshops Aug. 13 and Aug. 22 for Those Affected by July 4th Floods in Kerr County

NEWS RELEASE

HOUSTON, Texas (Aug. 13, 2025) –  Trauma and grief support facilitators from The Institute for Spirituality and Health at the Texas Medical Center (The Institute) and its Greater Houston Healing Collaborative (GHHC) program will host a Hunt Community Care Workshop on Wednesday, Aug. 13, in the Church Hall of Hunt United Methodist Church. The church is located at 120 Merritt Road in Hunt, Texas.

The Aug. 13 Hunt Community Care workshop is free and open to residents of Hunt. A complimentary healthy lunch will be served from 12:30 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. to provide an opportunity for fellowship before the workshop begins.  To register, please visit https://www.spiritualityandhealth.org/huntworkshops.

The Institute will also host a Church Staff Care Workshop on Friday, Aug. 22, at Kerrville Church of Christ from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., located at 1900 Texas-534 Loop in Kerrville. Church staff affiliated with any congregation in Kerr County are invited to attend this free workshop. To register, please visit https://bit.ly/churchstaffretreat.

Trained grief and trauma facilitators -- who have had extensive experience supporting individuals, families, first responders, and healthcare professionals in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey in 2017,  the Covid-19 pandemic, the derecho storm, and Hurricane Beryl in 2024 -- will lead these workshops. Participants will learn mind-body skills to help them cope with stress and to help them heal mentally, physically, spiritually, and emotionally.

We have been working with Kerr County leaders to support children and adults who have been impacted by the July 4th Guadalupe River floods with in-person and virtual support offerings. The Institute is devoted to supporting our neighbors by helping them navigate the acute, intermediate, and long-term psychosocial impact of this disaster,” commented Leah Adams Pruitt, vice president of engagement for the Institute. “We are thankful to have received letters of support from the Hunt Independent School District and St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Kerrville. This demonstrates that the mind-body skills we are teaching here to help and heal are adding value.”

Adams Pruitt is leading on-site program development and providing direct care sessions with clergy and community leaders while organizing various care workshops across Kerr County communities. She has more than 15 years of experience facilitating trauma and grief support groups. In 2021, Adams Pruitt became certified in Mind-Body Medicine through the Center for Mind-Body Medicine.

The GHHC is the anchor program for the Institute’s Center for Body, Spirit, and Mind. This program addresses the psychosocial needs of individuals through small groups and workshops centered on the awareness of how the body, spirit, and the mind are connected.
