SACRED MOMENTS IN MEDICINE
This intimate "evening of stories" will celebrate personal experiences of spiritual/special/sacred moments in medicine. Four narratives will be shared, each from different perspectives, with time for discussion at the end of the evening.

Anthony E. Brown, M.D., M.P.H. is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Family Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine. He received his medical degree from Baylor College of Medicine, completed residency at the University of California Irvine, and is certified by the American Board of Family Medicine.
Carolyn Monteith Clarke has been on the Board of the Institute for Spirituality and Health for twenty-five years, four of which she served as President. She was President of the Junior League of Houston and in 2007 was the recipient of the Adelaide Baker Award, given for continued volunteerism and leadership in the Houston community.
Dr. Gill is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Pediatrics and the Center for Medical Ethics at Baylor College of Medicine and is engaged in the development of educational offerings related to public health, professionalism, communication, cultural competency and palliative care.
Nancy Gordon is an active volunteer in the community. Nancy has volunteered for causes ranging from education and children to the environment and arts. Nancy has served on the Board of Trustees for several organizations including The Kinkaid School, TIRR Foundation, and Texas Children's Hospital. She is a founding member of the covenant Houston Texas Guild and VICTORY, a branch of the American Cancer Society.
John D. Hawkins has been a Principal with The Sterling Group, L.P., a private equity investment firm since 1999. Mr. Hawkins joined Sterling as an Associate in 1992. From 1986 to 1990, he was on the professional staff of Arthur Anderson & Co. Mr. Hawkins currently serves on the board of North American Energy Partners and on the Board of Trustees of the Presbyterian School in Houston. Mr. Hawkins received a B.S.BA.
Co-Founder/President, Contemplative Network (CN), Inc. an interdenominational Christian contemplative prayer organization that encourages interfaith collaboration and scientific research. Inspired at Gethsemani Trappist monastery, at the time home to Thomas Merton. Appointed by Trappist monk Thomas Keating, Commissioned Presenter/Co-coordinator, Contemplative Outreach Ltd.
Dr. Horvath was appointed chief of staff of the Michael E. DeBakey Veterans Affairs Medical Center on January 3, 1999. He serves as the most senior clinician in this tertiary care medical center. Dr. Horvath is also a professor in the Menninger Department of Psychiatry at the Baylor College of Medicine. Dr.
Susan Josey has been on the staff of St. John the Divine Episcopal Church for 7 years. She is on the Board of River Oaks Garden Club and The Junior League of Houston. Susan is the former director of Ministry, St. John the Divine Episcopal Church and active in many church ministries. She was Chairman of Dunlavy Guild Shop from 2005-2006 and Chairman of the Azalea Trail in 2005.
Rabbi Samuel E. Karff became Rabbi Emeritus of Congregation Beth Israel in May 1999 after serving his congregation for twenty-four years as Senior Rabbi. Rabbi Karff is presently Associate Director of the John McGovern Center for Health, Humanities and the Human Spirit and Visiting Professor in the Department of Family Medicine at the University of Texas Medical School in Houston, Texas.
Barbara Kirsch has worked with various charities and boards which include: Houston Opera, Houston Ballet, Houston Symphony, Wortham Center, American Museum Society, Trees of Hope, Harris County Heritage Society, The Museum of Natural Science, Houston Baptist Development Council, Houston Baptist University President's Advisory Council for 8 years, on the Executive Board for 2 years and Houston Baptist University Alumni Board of 
Dr. Lomax is Associate Chairman and Director of Educational Programs in the Department of Psychiatry at Baylor College of Medicine. He received his B.A. from Rice University in 1967 Magna Cum Laude and his M.D. with honors from Baylor College of Medicine in 1971. He was elected to Phi Beta Kappa and Alpha Omega Alpha. His internship in internal medicine at the University of Oregon.
Rabbi David Lyon is a native of Chicago, Illinois. He graduated from the University of Arizona in 1984, with a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration. He began his studies at Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion, Jerusalem in 1985. He earned his Master of Arts degree in Hebrew Letters in 1988 at HUC-JIR, Los Angeles, and was ordained Rabbi in 1990 at HUC-JIR, Cincinnati.
Dr. Charles Millikan is the Vice-President for Spiritual Care and Values Integration for The Methodist Hospital System of Houston. Born at The Methodist Hospital he has returned after serving as a parish pastor and as a member of the Bishop’s Cabinet in the Texas Annual Conference. He received his Local Preacher’s License at 18 years of age in Houston, Texas.
Fr. Donald S. Nesti, CSSp, a native of Pennsylvania, was ordained to the priesthood in 1963. He earned a licentiate and a doctorate in theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome. He has served the Congregation of the Holy Ghost in many capacities. Fr.
Laurence Payne has 34 years of experience in public service, education and not-for-profit leadership. Larry is recognized from City Hall to the White House with city, State and National leaders actively seek out his counsel in leadership, diversity, management, organization design, and strategic planning. Larry’s career in public service includes notable positions at the city, state and congressional levels.

Joe D. Robinson earned his Masters of Education from Southwest Texas State University. Since then he has worked as caseworker, therapist and coordinator for the Texana Mental Health and Mental Retardation Center; and as Assistant Manager for the Joe C. Wessendorf Estate.

Dr. Tschirch is Director for Nursing Program Development at the University of St. Thomas in Houston, TX. She is the administrator responsible for developing a School of Nursing at the university.
AnneMarie Wallace is the Interim Director of Congregational Care at First Presbyterian Church, Houston. Prior to this she was Manager of Clinical Chaplaincy Programs for the Department of Chaplaincy and Pastoral Education at The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas. She has worked for over 25 years in the field of healthcare at The University of Texas M. D.
Bonnie Weekley is a native Houstonian and received her degree from Trinity University in Education in Hearing Impared. She is married to David Weekley and has 3 children. Her involvement is in Non-Profit Boardsin Houston (with various positions and duties) which include: The Chinquapin School, the Houston Food Bank, Camp for All, Young Life, The Houston Zoo and the Institute for Spirituality and Health.
Rabbi Roy A. Walter was born in 1942, in Memphis, Tennessee. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Tulane University in New Orleans, and Bachelor and Master of Hebrew Letters degrees from Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion in Cincinnati. In 1970, he was ordained a Rabbi. In 1995, he was awarded a Doctor of Divinity degree from the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion.
Jim Walzel graduated from Rice University with a BA degree and a BS in Chemical Engineering. He has worked in the natural gas industry for most of his career. He worked at Houston Natural Gas Corporation for 17 years and was president of the company when it was acquired in 1985. He currently serves on the Board of Trustees at Southwestern University and as a Trustee of the Methodist Hospital Foundation.
John K. (Kim) Kehoe, D.B.A. is Senior Lecturer in Management, Jones Graduate School of Business at Rice University in Houston. He has been teaching various courses in leadership and organization behavior at Rice University since 2002.
The Rev. Gary H. Jones is the Director of Chaplaincy Services at St. Luke’s Episcopal Health System in Houston, Texas, the largest Episcopal health system in the country. He has over twenty years experience in the field of pastoral care, having served as director of Chaplains in two other health systems.
Basheer Khumawala was born and raised in a Muslim family in India and has been in the U.S. since 1963. He is currently the John & Rebecca Moores Professor of Supply Chain Management (SCM) in the C. T .Bauer College of Business at University of Houston. He started his academic career at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he was promoted to Full Professor.
Richard E. Wainerdi was elected President and Chief Executive Officer of the Texas Medical Center in 1984 after his retirement from the Gulf Oil Corporation.
